People in the thousands came to see and hear the legendary band play again after six long years. Sure, it was cut short and people shook their heads in disbelief. But it was a great first set from "Alapaap" to "Lightyears." Best effort from a man who underwent two angioplasties and, just two days earlier, lost his mother.

The band, the music, the crowd, and the silent tension--it was possibly the best one-hour concert I could ever attend. I may not know how to properly pronounce the album title, but at least I can say it’s awesome.

They sound different, yet familiar. The comforting moan-ish vocals and the haunted guitar-bowing are still there, but now with a fast pulse. There are actually (dare I say it?) “happy” songs in this album (gasp!) like the almost folk-like Gobbledigook and Við Spilum Endalaust, which reminds me of Coldplay. And yes, their first English track titled All Alright, with its sleepy piano background. But it still kinda sounds Icelandic, since Jónsi’s practically whispering the lyrics in falsetto.

It’s not their usual and that’s not a bad thing. I think this album is a leap for them. :)

    <lj:music>"Blue Light" - Bloc Party</lj:music>

Thank gawd, it's not blistering hot today. I've been hydrating and sweating too much lately. :-[ But heat stroke, rice shortage, and price hikes aside, I think I like this summer, especially the lovely blue sky.

In keeping with the summer theme, I have pictures from our last slumber / pig-out party at Chuck’s place. Actually, I covered most of the slumbering part while Chuck, Shar, and Leng were up until morning. Weird, because when I actually have people to share my insomnia with, I fell asleep. :-/ Anyway, it was long weekend, we had no money, and we needed to huddle and talk about lives over food.

The Boring Friends strike back! :)

Honestly, we just went to Chuck's house to annoy him, read magazines, and watch Mighty Ducks 3, which he has never seen! Chuck needs 90s pop culture re-education! Lol.

Chuck LOLing at high school.

Morning, Leng! *Glomp*

Don’t let the smiles fool you, we are not morning people.

Silly little girls.

We miss Lovelite food! It’s like a feminine wash ad and I la-la-love it!

Will upload more pictures here.

***
Catherine of Aragon (Ana Torrent), Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman), and Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson) was out-bitching each other in "The Other Boleyn Girl." I was rooting for Catherine. She was all, “Oh, I don't think so, beeyotch!” Lol. I think the movie, in general, is uninspired. It wasn't bad, but the ending was a real let down. Natalie was very pretty though.

***
Pulp Summer Slam 8 is this April 26 and the Hong Kong band King Ly Chee will be there! Yeah, yeah, yeah! But I have work that day so no mosh pit for me. Frown.

    <lj:music>"Take Me Anywhere" - Tegan and Sara</lj:music>

We all need to get inspired and be scared shit once in a while. It's good for you. So last Thursday, not exactly planned and not exactly on a whim, I went on a daytrip to Baguio by myself just because.

Wednesday, around 10 p.m., I packed a light backpack with some munchies and other essentials. Thursday, 12 a.m, I unhurriedly got ready. 2:00 a.m., I called for a cab. I was at the Dagupan bus station in Cubao after 10 minutes and waited in line for a ticket. 3:00-something a.m., I talked to a random conductor and asked if I can get inside a bus already because "I've been waiting for hours" and there's no ticket left. He bought it and shoved me to the next waiting bus. Around 3:40 a.m, we left for Baguio.

After so many naps and stopovers, we arrived there around brunch time. I directly went to mass, ate lunch in Jollibee (wow, how creative), aimlessly walked around, and took four cab rides. I have no justifiable purpose of going there, but the idea of traveling alone to somewhere far and being at your random best just sounds so fun. Of course, I was nervous of getting lost in the mountains or being mugged or my organs getting sold in the black market, but I think I did ok.

This is only my second time in Baguio and I tried to visit the places I haven't been yet. Unfortunately, I couldn't find Kidlat Tahimik's gallery because I was too embarrassed to ask for directions. Crap. :( But I did visit Tam-awan Village, Camp John Hay, the parks, ukay-ukay and wagwagan places, little craft shops, and bought stuff in Baguio market--all in a very tight budget.

Around 7 p.m., I headed back to Manila and was home Friday midnight. So, I spent more time in the bus than in Baguio. But I came home safely, a little tired, and it was great. :)

The long and winding Kennon road.

Lahar deposits in Pampanga. It's Holy Week after all.

With Bertie the St. Bernard in Burnham Park. They charge 20 pesos per photo. I can tell Bertie isn’t too happy of his day job.

No picture taking of paintings allowed in Tam-awan Village, but what the hey. I was hoping to see BenCab's works, but unfortunately they don't have his pieces there anymore.

Psychedelic Beetle.

In Arko ni Apo Art Gallery where I met one of the owners and artist Bumbo Villanueva (the guy right here), son of artist / sculptor Ben-Hur Villanueva. They also have a little café where they serve soya coffee.

"Oh hay der flutterby.

Very hung over with Incubus. I still have concert afterglow. :) I'm so happy I didn't miss it! This is atonement for not catching their first concert in Manila. I really love them and their music. You know, I didn't think it was possible they could get any better, until I saw them perform live last Sunday.

Brandon was oh-my-god! half-naked and sang beautifully, and Mike just eased through it like a guitar god. They didn't perform "Pardon Me" or "A Certain Shade of Green" though. But I think even if they played all their songs, it still wouldn't be enough for me. Haha. They ended it with "Aqueous Transmission," my fave, so I’m one happy fangirl. :)

Brandon: "Glaiza, I’ve come back to Manila for you." (LOL)

I have vids, but I was all over the place, so every clip is messed up and has me screaming in the background. I don't think people wanna see or hear that.

I should've stalked them when I had the chance last Saturday. I could have been the one who touched Brandon's hand or rode the same elevator with DJ Kilmore. Tsk.

***
We also had a great shoot yesterday with two gifted and humble actors. "Hanging out" with them was so fun. They were so cool and game and effortlessly hot. Hahaha. I want to post the behind-the-scenes, but I don't think I'm allowed to. Hmmm.

***
I should have more kilig moments, so I can forget my suck-y state of affairs. Time to write, write, write now!

PS: And since no one wants to buy stuff from my LJ garage sale, you people now know what you’re going to get for your birthdays or this Christmas. :)

I have some stuff--old, new, freebies I got from somewhere--you can buy for cheaper prices. Not a business, just like a friendly garage sale via Livejournal.

I have no concrete idea what to sell, but here are some things I saw just right now that I think I can part with. Prices are negotiable, of course. A fair trade is good too:

* Brand new purple Cross Vice pen. I think it's originally priced at Php 1000+. I have no use for expensive pens unless it has some telestic powers that'll help me write well. Buy it for Php 500.

* Goodwill Bookstore gift certificate worth Php 500, good until October this year. Buy it for Php 300.

* Complete Fruits Basket (anime) in English, 4 DVDs. I bought it for 600, which I think is kind of a rip-off, but it's a very good copy and a bit sentimental, so you can have it for Php 400.

* Maybe movie DVDs, CDs of Scissor Sisters or Mark Bautista (fwahahaha!), and back issues of Summit Media magazines (more fwahahaha!). Whatever. I'll look for more stuff. Suggestions are welcomed too.

Oh, and if you know anyone who's selling Upper Box A tickets to the Incubus concert in Araneta on March 9 please make contact. NOW. Thanks. :)

    <lj:music>"Parade" - Pretty Girls Make Graves</lj:music>

Cross-post!

Erase whatever high school English Literature memory you have of Hamlet, because Repertory Philippines first ever take on Shakespeare's tragedy will shock you. As if a storyline of murder, madness, treachery, incest, and vengeance isn't unnerving enough, REP—now in its 71st season—gives the audience something darker, more violent, and raw.

In this retelling of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Prince Hamlet (played by Niccolo Manahan) attempts to seek revenge on his Uncle Claudius (Joel Trinidad) for poisoning his father, King of Denmark (Pom Docena), and ascending to the throne.

"Everyone knows Hamlet and it's been done, so I need to retell it in a different way and also in a way that will get the younger audience," said director Ana Abad Santos-Bitong on her stage directorial debut. "Excited, I thought of a primal Hamlet set in a land ravaged by war. No tights, no lavish sets, no British accents. Just a nameless world stripped its core and a son crying for revenge."

And strip they did. The stage itself is a story, thanks to set designer Denis Lagdameo. It is otherworldly with real dirt, suspended smoke, and lighting that half hides everyone in sinister-like shadow. Denis is also responsible for the very real weapons from huge machetes to katar dagger made of blunted steel that weighs as heavy as it sounds during the fight scenes. The cast donned in elaborate Faust Peneyra's costume of leather and faux fur was so beautifully anti-Shakespeare that you would think it's a TV fantaserye.

Ana was actually inspired by the ‘80s action film Mad Max which explains other characters Mohawk hair and the nightmarish feel of the set. "It started off from there, then it just grew with my creative team. Everyone shared my vision. We were able to sort of make our own world," she pointed out. Add to that the haunting original score of Jethro Joaquin and a powerhouse cast—it's a production unlike any other.

The audience will love the maddened Prince Hamlet in dark eyeliner played by Niccolo Manahan. He nailed Hamlet's angst-filled soliloquies and spouting the famous line, "To be or not to be: that is the question." But he remains charming in his melancholy. The wonderfully choreographed fight between Hamlet and the ass-kicking Laertes (Jamie Wilson) with realistic albeit blunted weapons left the audience in awe. Joel Trinidad's robust performance as the new king of Denmark, Claudius, commanded attention. "I did Hamlet in the early ‘90s. I played Laertes and even then, I loved the role of Claudius because he's so evil and so hateful," Joel recalled.

The only ladies on stage, Frances Makil-Ignacio and Cris Villonco, were strong as they were seductive. Frances transformed the weak Gertrude to an attention-hungry and conniving queen, while Cris portrayed a balisong-slinging and passionate Ophelia. It was both amusing and heartbreaking to see Ophelia's downward spiral to madness. "Ana didn't want me running all over the stage. But definitely, you know that something is going on with her head, you know there's been a drastic change," Cris said of Ophelia's "crazy stillness."

Completing the eclectic and talented cast are Bodjie Pascua as Polonius; Randy Villarama as Horatio; Red Concepcion as Rosencrantz; Felix Rivera as Guildenstern; Jejie Esguerra as Osric; Jerald Napoles as Marcellus; Hans Eckstein as Barnardo; Francis Mathue as Francisco; and Pom Docena as the creepy ghost of Hamlet's father.

Although the formal and tedious Shakespearean language is used for the dialogue, audience can very well relate and keep up with the fast-paced story. After all, there's no replacement for striking lines such as, "Frailty, thy name is woman!" or "I will speak daggers to her, but use none."
